Ken Yager Yosemite Peaches

Ken Yager is a true steward of Yosemite National Park. His biggest dreams as a teenager was to climb El Capitan and move to Yosemite. After accomplishing that goal at such a young age, he assimlated into the Yosemite climbing culture and was able to climb with some of the legends before he became one himself. Today, he is revered for his service to the park as the founder of the Yosemite Facelift which is the biggest cleanup project in an national park. That stewardship earned Ken The David R. Brower Conservation Award in 2015 which is something he never imagined in his wildest dreams.

Ken also is the president of the Yosemite Climbing Association where he is spearheading an effort to bring a climbing museum to Yosemite National Park. Shelton Johnson Yosemite Peaches

Yosemite is the embodiment of everything that is beautiful in this world.

Shelton Johnson

Shelton Johnson is one of Yosemite’s preeminent ambassadors. He welcomes visitors to the park on a daily basis and treats each one with kindness and warmth. Best known for his role in “National Parks: America’s Best Idea”, a documentary film by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, Shelton invites visitors of public lands to connect fully with nature and wilderness. His mission is to encourage more people of color to claim their cultural inheritance in national parks.

Shelton Johnson Yosemite Peaches

Shelton is an interpreter of living history. He shares stories of the fascinating lives of Buffalo Soldiers along with their role in the early years of Yosemite National Park. Shelton retells those stories to encourage others to join him in this natural wonderland. His strategy was successful as he inspired Oprah Winfrey to join him on her very first camping trip in Yosemite. Although he reaches many, Shelton admits there is more work to be done as invisible barriers keep people from color from visiting national parks.

Join us as we discuss Shelton’s influence on visitors from all over the world to Yosemite National Park. There’s so much more he shares as we also received a visit from a black bear in Cook’s Meadow.

Shelton Johnson is a classically trained musician. He finds inspiration in the music of Jean Sibelius. He believes Sibelius Symphony Number 4 is a perfect Yosemite anthem.

George Whitmore Yosemite Peaches

On November 12, 2018, exactly sixty years to this day, George Whitmore topped out on El Capitan as the third member to complete that historic climb. He joined Warren Harding and Wayne Merry as the climbing party to make the first ascent on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. They celebrated with champagne and canned peaches. Join George as he recounts his memories of that epic climb and what originally attracted him to the sport of rock climbing.

George Whitmore Yosemite Peaches

So many things had to fall into place for the group to achieve this amazing feat, and George was instrumental. From designing pitons that enabled the original group to ascend the Stove Legs to heading down for a resupply for the final bolts as Harding and Merry literally ran out on the final push, George is proud of being described as the party’s Sherpa. George’s military service in the Air Force added an interesting twist to the plot.

George Whitmore Yosemite Peaches

As big of an accomplishment climbing El Capitan was, George relishes his work in conservation even more. He is an unsung activist who learned from his experience on the rock to never take no for an answer. His lobbying success was attributed to that perseverance. George successfully helped protect the Ansel Adams Wilderness and parts of Sequoia National Park. The George Whitmore Yosemite Peaches show is the longest we have produced, and I believe it to be very meaningful. I hope you can tune in to hear the story of this amazing man.
